About BUCHANAN y story

The Buchanan YMCA, founded as the Japanese YMCA in 1886, joined the YMCA of San Francisco in 1916 and opened at its current location at 1530 Buchanan Street in 1936. With deep roots in a culturally diverse neighborhood, particularly within the Japanese American and African American communities, the Buchanan Y is a cornerstone of support in San Francisco's Western Addition and Fillmore District.

At Buchanan YMCA, we are dedicated to fostering youth development, supporting older adults, and providing a nurturing environment for teens through our comprehensive community center.
